CANONIZATION OF BOTH POPES JOHN XXIII AND JOHN PAUL II 27TH APRIL 2014
2014-04-14

The church is very happy with the canonization of 2 of the greatest popes John XXIII and John Paul II. Among other important events, John XXIII was the pope, who convoked Vatican Council II. John Paul II was the pope of the World Youth Days and the pope of the family.

The canonization day coincide with the second Sunday of the Easter Season, of the Divine Mercy, a celebration which was established by John Paul II .

John Paul II was proclaimed Blessed by Bento XVI on the 1st of May 2011, in St. Peter’s square.

Karol Jozef Wojtyla, elected Pope on 16 October 1978, was born in Wadowice (Poland) on 18 May 1920 and died in the Vatican on 2 April 2005.

The Catholic Church celebrates his liturgical feast on 22 October. This day also marks the beginning of Karol Wojtyla’s pontificate in 1978, shortly after he was elected pope.

Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli was born in 1881 in Sotto il Monte, Bérgamo, where he was parish priest, teacher at the seminary, the secretary of the bishop and Chaplain at the army during the First World War.

John XXIII began his diplomatic career in Bulgary as apostolic visitor from 1925 to 1935; afterwards in Turkey and Greece, from 1934 to 1944 and Apostolic Nuncio in France from 1944 to 1953.

In 1953, Angelo Roncalli was invited to be the Patriach of Venice and on 28 October 1958 was elected pope succeeding Pio XII.

John XXIII was Blessed by John Paul II on 3 September 2000.

John Paul II and Blessed Alexandrina

John Paul II was the pope who proclaimed Blessed our beloved Alexandrina in the 25th of April 2004. We quote his words about Blessed Alexandrina (Homily of her Beatification):

«"Do you love me?", Jesus asks Simon Peter, who replies: "Yes Lord, you know that I love you"». The life of Blessed Alexandrina Maria da Costa can be summarized in this dialogue of love. Permeated and burning with this anxiety of love, she wished to deny nothing to her Saviour. With a strong will, she accepted everything to demonstrate her love for him. A "spouse of blood", she relived mystically Christ's passion and offered herself as a victim for sinners, receiving strength from the Eucharist: this became her only source of nourishment for the final 13 years of her life.

With the example of Blessed Alexandrina, expressed in the trilogy "suffer, love, make reparation", Christians are able to discover the stimulus and motivation to make "noble" all that is painful and sad in life through the greatest evidence of love: sacrificing one's life for the beloved.
